What Does Comparing Numbers Mean?
Comparing means looking at two numbers or two groups and telling how they are different.
More Than and Fewer Than
When we compare groups of things, we use "more than" and "fewer than". Six stars are more than four stars.
Greater Than and Less Than
When we compare numbers, we use "greater than" and "less than". 25 is greater than 12. 12 is less than 25.
The Biggest Number
The biggest number is the one that is greater than all the others. It comes later when we count.

Start With Things You Can Touch
Use toys, blocks, or coins. Make two piles and ask which pile has more.
Use a Number Line
The number farther to the right is bigger. Practice with our Number Line Counting worksheets.
Count Out Loud
Numbers that come later in the count are bigger. Counting aloud helps kids feel the order.
Make It a Game
Flip two number cards and let your child say which is bigger. Whoever is right gets a point.
