Long and Short Vowels
Children sort pictures or words into categories labeled "Long Vowel" and "Short Vowel." This reinforces the auditory difference between the sounds and their spellings. They also practice writing the correct long or short vowel to complete a word (e.g., filling in the missing vowel in "b_t" to make "bat" or "boat").
